Son of a soldier, I was born in Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district, Bihar. My childhood days were spent in an earthy rural life. I was deeply inspired by the rich folk culture of Buddha’s own land, Bihar. Right from the beginning, I Grew up with real images of Melas, Ramleelas, Bahuripiyas, incredible rituals, strong religious milieu and the vibrant Mithila Art. Natural calamities like flood and drought gifted unforgettable images. Changing seasons of rural life on the bank of river Ganga matured into a sense of poetry and language. Wonder years passed chasing steam trains that passed through the fields of my native village. Listening to radio programs made for defense personals was my only window to the outside world. With such a treasure of inspirational experiences a story teller evolved. I am a practicing film maker in Bombay today.

On the name of religion dozens of Hindu hermits in saffron robes angrily burned the CDs and posters of 'Strings'.

Hindu hermits burn the effigy of Sanjay Jha, the director of Bollywood film Strings, during a protest in Allahabad, India, Monday, July 17, 2006.

wonder and surprise...

i just wonder, baba nagarjun being such an important poet of india, when his poem 'mantra' in my film 'strings' faced such strong 'super censorship' today, why no literary person raised a voice against it...

poem being in public domain almost for 35 years today and with due rights taken, and being composed musically, i feel so let down and lonely with the discouragement shown towards this effort specially by hindi literary circle by not raising a voice against such an attack on the rights of expressions of a poet.

PIL is filed in Allahabad High court by Hindu Sadhus against the text of the poem 'mantra' written in 1969 by baba Nagarjun.

my film 'STRINGS' has no takers just because no multiplex theatre wants to take any risk of any damage by fanatics around. distributers want film to be free from all legalities. PIL in Allahabad High court has been frozen as Hindu sadhu's have realised that there are no super stars in my film, hence they will not gain any publicity.i am stuck...

in total there are only two reports in hindi on the poem and 'super censorship' till date ...
one in hindi 'outlook'and other in hindi daily 'amar ujala' in Bareli.

this censorship is such nonsense. they just don't want to promote good cinema in India! Sanjay, i guess the choice of the name 'Warren Hastings' for Adam Bedi's character is no coincidence, heh? ;-)

working on some scripts, but i want to make a real film, not just to sell the issue on the name of reality, and for this i have to wait for the right time,in terms of finding a source for fund with the same faith...a producer who would also want to make an issue based good cinema, search is on...

have not seen the movie. Have seen th epromo's thought. Looka like an adventure towards discovering the intrigues inside oneself.
As far as the protests are concerned, dont worry, it is inevitable in a country like india.
after all a million people are bound to have different viewpoints on a subject matter.
hope you write about the film making process and your experiences during the film making process.
will definitely be waiting for your next post. will try to see the work in december.
till then best of luck

and since you are at making real films, have you considered issues that grapple the youth ?
say issues like intense competetion, peer pressure, eve teasing, homosexuality and the like. . .
agreed that it would be difficult to find individual producers for such concepts, however you could very well approach NGO's and trusts for raising the required funds and awareness. I am sure they will be of a great help.
best of luck with your endeavour.

Jha ji,

I have not seen the movie you have made, may be shall chk out if i can get the DVD somewere..

I was not surprised with the Stand Sadhu's [has any Sadhu filed the PIL or its filed by someone else .. ppl do these nasty thing to gain Publicity !] have taken and moved to court and other protest !

these ppl dont have some work to do so they get involved in such Stupid kind of things !

but i was quite surprised to what a company like HMV Sa Re Ga Ma did
i read in your blog about this !
SAD thing .. i dont think HMV Sa Re Ga Ma would do this !

I am sure they must have paid you VERY LESS for the rights as they have also claimed that you dont have Selling Point in movie [i mean Big Stars]!

However, after watching your movie i shall comment on that, though i dont knw the ABCD of film making but love to comment on cinemas !

meanwhile .. what i can do is to wish you all the best for future !

Cheers !

Manoj Lahoti
